Each birth is a unique journey during which you are at your most powerful and yet most vulnerable. It is a significant life event that can impact upon you for the rest of your life. Because of this, it is important that you feel in control of you birth and have made decisions that were right for you. Throughout your pregnancy you will have worked closely with your midwife becoming informed and discussing your birthing desires. During labour and birth your midwife will then work with you to help you achieve a safe and satisfying birthing experience. Your own midwife will be on call for your birth 24 hrs a day. Wherever you decide to birth your baby, your midwife can come to your home when you feel you are going into labour.
Occasionally despite all of your best intentions and efforts complications can occur. At My Own Midwife, our aim is to empower you to make the appropriate choices should this happen without feeling any sense of failure. Our midwives want you to rejoice in your ability to safely birth your baby however they choose to arrive.
Gold Coast University Hospital
If you decide to birth at Gold Coast University Hospital your midwife will be able to provide all of your labour and birth care. Your midwife will work with you and your birthing partner to help achieve the birth you desire.
Should you decide to birth at any other hospital the hospital midwives will provide your clinical care. However, your midwife will stay with you as a birth support and act as advocate to ensure that your birth choices are adhered to as far a possible. The continuity and reinforcement of information will ensure that you feel positive in even the most clinical of settings.
Current research shows that a planned home birth is a safe choice for women with a normal risk pregnancy and is less likely to result in unnecessary medical intervention. If you choose to birth at home, your midwife will be with you throughout your labour. Your midwife will support and advise you on ways to assist progress and reduce discomfort, as well as monitoring the well being of you and your baby.
At My Own Midwife we believe the safety of you and your baby is paramount and as the birth approaches your midwife will be joined by a second midwife who you will have met at our clinic. You midwife will also bring along all of the necessary equipment to ensure a safe birthing environment.
Following the birth of your baby, your midwife will remain with you for several hours. During this time your midwife will ensure that you and your baby are well, promoting skin-to-skin contact and supporting breastfeeding.
At My Own Midwife all of our midwives are highly experienced in water birth and this option is available for both hospital and home births. We have several inflatable birth pools available for hire and all of our equipment is waterproof which enables us to monitor your baby without causing you unnecessary disruption.
